The turn of the 19th century saw an explosive industrial revolution in the North American countries. Nearly 200 years later, North America shows no signs of slowing down, and contemporary western medicine exemplifies this unstoppable growth.

However, according to the World Health Organization (W.H.O), the United States ranks very low compared to other nations. In a report released by the World Health Organization, the United States is ranked in the high-thirty range, as compared to the rest of the world. In spite of this, Carl Bialik, a journalist for the Wall Street Journal, asserts that this disappointing health rating was due to “…economic factors outside of the [United States] Government’s control.” Bialik continues to explicitly state the dominance of modern medicine in the western world, and gives powerful evidence to support his claim.

In this article, I hope to dig to the very core of conventional western medicine, and will begin with a historical overview of medicine in the western world. To continue, I will also be discussing the technological advances in Miami, Florida. However, it is critical to begin at the beginning of medicine, and how modern western medicine has come to be.

History of Medical Advances in the Western World

Although contemporary western medicine is thriving in the contemporary western world, it was the French Philosopher, Rene Descartes, who has truly revolutionized the field of medicine.
Rene Descartes was an ambitious metaphysical, logical, and ethical philosopher of the 17th century. In addition, Descartes was also a well known mathematician, and has been named one of the greatest philosophers to have ever lived.

Apart from his scientific breakthroughs in mathematics/maths, Descartes has also proposed various concepts regarding alternative medicine, and offered revolutionary medical ideas, and also discussed improvement for the over-all standard of living. Descartes’ revolutionary medical concepts are as follows:

  • Inspired the procedure to diagnose patients
  • Inspired the procedure used to treat patients
  • Called for the greatest health reform in the history of mankind
  • Finally, Rene Descartes has served as a source of inspiration to the philosophical community

John Locke, a key member in creating the United States Constitution, and also a well known philosopher of the 18th century, has furthered Descartes’ previous work in modern medicine; Locke has implemented these ideas into the United States Constitution. Although Locke’s influence on contemporary medicine can’t be inferred explicitly, the United States Bill of Rights is strongly based off of Locke’s metaphysical beliefs. Locke’s metaphysical beliefs state that each individual has a right to live without the threat of death/diseases.

After the United States industrial revolution, there were many technological advances in nearly every single field of study. This brought about a rampant growth in the medical industry, and since has lead to all of the medical technologies the western world has today.

Modern Medicine: Miami, Florida

A great example of how contemporary western medicine is developing is seen in Miami, Florida.

Miami is a popular tourist location in the United States, and boasts one of the best economies in the nation. Apart from the constant stream of tourists pouring in and out of Miami, a majority of the population is above the age of 50. To continue, it isn’t absurd to assume the medical advances in Miami are typically centered around physical diseases, disorders and conditions.

Arthritis, dementia, diabetes, joint rehabilitation, and multiple heart diseases are only a small portion of the ailments Miami is known for excelling in curing. In fact, the University of Miami Health System has quite a reputation for harboring some of the best physicians/doctors in the nation:

“UHealth doctors are recognized among[st] the nation’s most respected [doctors], and more than 400 are listed as “best doctors” in regional and national rankings.”

In conclusion, the conventional medicine Miami has found in the western world showcase some of the most sophisticated medical technology our society has seen yet. So advanced, in fact, it leaves us with one question: What new medical technologies await the world in the future?
