Neurofeedback is not a new type of therapy. It has been practiced for over 50 years. It is simple in its design, using only electrodes, wires and two computer screens. the system has been lauded for transforming an unwanted behavior or thought pattern without drugs or invasive treatment. The result is a brain that has been trained to respond in a positive manner. There are a multitude of conditions that neurofeedback has been used to treat. Depression, migranes, OCD, PTSD and autism have all benefited from this therapy.

How Does Neurofeedback Therapy Work?

The therapist will begin by asking the client about their personal and family background and asses the behavior that requires treatment. The therapist will then use glue to affix a few electrodes to the patient’s head. Wires will then be attached from the electrodes to a computer monitor. The electrodes feed brain wave patterns into the therapist’s computer. They are interpreted and fed back into the patient’s computer screen. The patient’s display reads more like a video game. Desirable brain waves are seen as positive interactions in the game. Any negative indication helps the patient see which brain waves are not beneficial. This is a process that is gradually learned over time. It typically takes 10 sessions of 20 to 60 minutes each to achieve the desired change. Up to 20 sessions for a complete change is seen as normal. These sessions typically occur 1 or more times a week. Once learned, the behavior stays learned. It is a therapy that will benefit the patient for a lifetime.

What Are The Negative Effects of Anxiety?

Because anxiety is directly related to stress, neurotherapy seeks to change thought patterns that relate directly to stress. Chronic stress can be a thought pattern that the brain has difficulty getting itself out of. Furthermore, the negative effects of stress and anxiety can be felt by many different areas of the body. The mind, emotions, physical body, endocrine and immune systems are all affected. These are some symptoms that can be diminished by neurofeedback for anxiety:

  • Negative thinking
  • Anger issues
  • Exhaustion
  • Re-occurring panic or fear
  • Hormonal imbalance

How Does Neurofeedback Target Anxiety?

As a person trains his/her brain, they can see brainwaves live on an EEG computer monitor. As the client learns to reduce anxiety and increase calm, they can observe a change in brainwave activity. With neurofeedback, the client learns to recreate the ideal state. The response to stress is also regulated so that anxiety is minimized and occurs less often. What is neurofeedback therapy?
