We are fortunate to live in a time when we have access to the many practices and benefits of integrative therapies. These therapies provide treatments that are non-invasive and encourage the body to begin its own process of self healing and takes into consideration the whole person; body, mind and spirit. The assumption is that the body has its own built in ability to heal itself. Also known as naturopathic or Holistic Medicine, many styles have been around for thousands of years. In particular and probably the most well known is the ancient Chinese method of acupuncture. Acupuncture utilizes the thinnest of needles inserted into precise points on the body. The idea of needles may frighten people who are not used to the practice, but it is actually painless and provides proven relief to pain and other conditions.

Taking a Closer Look

There are clinics and integrative medicine centers that address a particular type of problem, such as cancer, and others that offer combined approaches to a variety of afflictions. Cancer centers will incorporate state of the art traditional technologies along with holistic treatment. Two well known doctors who were pioneers in the advancement of integrative medicine are Dr. Andrew Weill and Deepak Chopra, both of whom have centers for treatment and education. Individual trained practitioners are also available in various schools of naturopathic healing, including massage, aromatherapy, diet, allergy treatment, yoga and meditation and other methods as well. There are a multitude of benefits in alternative healing, particularly in the concept that an individual can learn the way to maintain one’s own health to live a long and active live. Some of the benefits are as follows:

  • Reduction of stress
  • Weight loss
  • Increased mobility
  • Self knowledge
  • Balance of mind and body
  • Preventative care
  • Healthy diet

Alternative Treatments

Other types of effective alternative integrative treatments include Reiki, part of the school of healing that focuses on touch and fields of energy which are unseen but believed to be part of the body, both inner and outer. Some less known methods use color or sound as healing tools. Crystals and gemstones are important components of other styles of treatment, as well as heated stones or water or herbs. Many alternative methods have developed in other countries such as Ayurveda originating in India. There are 15 benefits and more of integrative medicine that have helped people for generations and are well worth exploring.
