Moxibustion is one of the therapies in the Chinese traditional medicine. It entails the use of a burnt mugwort herb that is placed on acupuncture points of the body and removed before it burns the body. There are two types of moxibustion. They include direct and indirect direct moxibustion, a cone-shaped moxa is placed on the body then burnt. This category is further divided in to two, that is, scarring and non-scarring moxibustion. As the name states, in scarring moxibustion, the burning moxa is left on the body until it goes off by itself. On the other hand, in the non-scarring moxibustion, the moxa is put off just before it can burn the body to avoid scarring. In the indirect type, the moxa stick is burnt just above the acupuncture point to avoid pain and scarring.

Benefits of Moxibustion

Moxibustion has many benefits. Some of them are;

• Treatment for colds
During the moxibustion, cold is expelled. This is because the burning of the moxa stick/cone on or near the body leads to warming of the meridians and restores normal circulation in the body.

• Breech presentations
Moxibustion is also used in breech representations. It is used to increase the movement of fetus in the body. This way it is able to achieve the turn of the fetus into the required head-down position.

• Menstruation Cramps
Moxibustion is very effective in the relief menstruation cramps. In order to achieve this, the moxa stick is placed on or near the abdominal area. Research shows that the therapy is able to relieve pain immediately. Also, it treats infertility in men and women.

• Inflammations
Moxibustion is also very effective in the treatment of inflammations. This is especially in cases of people with arthritis or tendinitis conditions.

Moxibustion just like intravenous ozone therapy is used as antioxidant. It aids in the balance and flow of body energy. Also, in this way its benefits equal the benefits of milk thistle extract. This is where it is used as a treatment for inflammations. Additionally, it is commonly used with other types of Chinese traditional medicine such as acupuncture. It can also be integrated into modern medicine as a supportive therapy. Stem cell therapies is one of such treatments where moxibustion is used as a supportive therapy. Here, it helps ease the pain of the therapy and the chemotherapy done before it.
