Hydrogen peroxide therapy is seen as controversial and beneficial. Because it is readily available, inexpensive, and powerful, it is growing in popularity. However, because there is a lack of full knowledge regarding how it affects the body, there is still some controversy regarding it. It is a good rule of thumb to understand that more is not always the better solution. For example, it is easy to allow the benefits of using hydrogen peroxide as an alternative therapy to lead to harming oneself by an overdose.

Hydrogen peroxide is the combination of an extra oxygen atom with water. While many people believe that hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that is manmade, it is actually a natural substance. When used as therapy, the extra oxygen molecule in hydrogen peroxide focuses on eliminating the toxins, viruses, and bacteria in the body. This, of course, is the clear benefit of using it as a therapy.

The Controversy Behind Using Hydrogen Peroxide as Therapy

Hydrogen peroxide is not as stable as water:

  • Chemically React – it can easily chemically react and turn into oxygen and water.
  • Oxidizing – while this might sound non-toxic, it can easily free the extra atom of oxygen and begin a reaction known as oxidizing.
  • Controversy – This is the reaction that causes much of the controversy surrounding using it as therapy.

Oxidizing can neutralize the harmful effect of bacteria and chemicals, but it can also have a damaging effect. Oxidation can also cause metal to rust. The extra molecule in hydrogen peroxide is a free radical. Research has shown that antioxidants decrease any harmful damage that free radicals can cause. As a result, hydrogen peroxide therapy side effects can increase the free radicals in a person’s body and cause potentially, immeasurable damage.

Administering Hydrogen Peroxide Safely

Pure hydrogen peroxide, like pure oxygen is very flammable. The combination of 10% water and 90% hydrogen peroxide actually is used as rocket fuel. As a result, you should use caution when administering it as therapy to make sure that there is a correct amount of dilution and concentration of it being used. Hydrogen peroxide that is found in stores is typically a diluted 3% solution in water. At this solution level, it can still kill off any germs and be used as a mouthwash or a disinfectant.
