Some Do’s and Don’t’s IV Therapy

The two most important things you can do when you’re ready to do your IV therapy at home is to keep yourself, including your clothing, clean and to take your time. IV therapy is not something that can be rushed. You never want to use something like a razor to prepare yourself for it IV therapy. Razors can cause open wounds, which means dirty bacteria and the last thing you want do during IV therapy is draw blood. A better way to prepare yourself for it is to practice checking your friends and relatives’ veins as well as your own. Here are a few other tips below:

  • Ensure that the IV line is placed so that there is no risk of someone tripping over it. It could seriously damage your vein and fluid could build up over your skin.
  • Make sure that the catheter is the right size for your needs to prevent over-dosage.
  • When possible, insert the IV into your non-dominant arm.

What IV Therapy is Commonly Used For

The main purpose of IV vitamin therapy is to balance electrolytes from effects of treatments such as chemotherapy and very recent blood transfusions. In some cases, it’s even used to correct severe dehydration. IV therapy works by pumping medication very rapidly and directly into the heart, which allows blood circulation to immediately become more balanced everywhere. Some patients who come into the emergency room must receive it by a central line, or a larger vein, rather than a small one. If a sudden swelling or warmth occurs during the alternative therapy, medical treatment should be sought immediately. Implanting the needle must also be done with extreme caution.
