Rehydration therapies are meant for the purpose of treating dehydration or replacement of fluids in the body. There are two forms of rehydration therapies. They include oral and intravenous hydration. Oral rehydration involves administration of a salt or sugar concentrated water solution by mouth. It is mostly used for the treatment of dehydration caused by diarrhea. Generally, this form of rehydration is used for moderate cases of rehydration. Intravenous rehydration therapies, on the other hand are more complex. They involve the use of drip systems inserted to the arm for regulated flow of fluids into the body. It is used in the severe cases of dehydration. Rehydration therapies are mostly used to complement other treatments and therapies. Complementary Therapies

  • Intravenous Nutrition therapies – These therapies involve the intravenous administration of nutrients to the body. The nutrients are administered to alleviate a deficiency of some minerals in the body. The myers cocktail, is the most popular of this therapies. Rehydration therapies when used along with nutrition therapies helps to curb hydration caused by high concentration of minerals in the body.
  • Chelation therapy – Chelation therapy is aimed at the removal of heavy metals in the body through the intravenous administration of a synthetic solution. Some of the chelation therapy benefits include the treatment of coronary diseases. This is by reduction of artery blocking from the heavy metals.
  • IPT – IPT stands for insulin potentiation therapy. This therapy is also known as low dose chemotherapy. It involves the administration of non-diabetic insulin for the treatment of cancer. It is also efficient in the relief of neck and pelvic pains.


Rehydration therapies should be prescribed or administered by medical practitioners. Particularly, for the intravenous rehydration therapies. This is because the solution require is different for different conditions and age of the patient. During this therapy, the area to be injected with a catheter will first be disinfected. The fluids are then administered through a drip system connected to the catheter. The medical practitioner should ensure that all times, the fluid is flowing at the required rate and that it is not leaking.
There are few side effects associated with the intravenous rehydration. Infections in the injected area, infiltration and imbalance of nutrients in the body are some of the rehydration therapy side effects.
