Glutathione is a protein that consists of three important acids. It is important in the human body as an antioxidant. From all the antioxidants that the human body produces, glutathione is the most powerful. The work of an antioxidant is to fight oxidative stress. Once there is a balance between the antioxidant and the oxidative stress, then a person can be termed as healthy. For the young, the levels of glutathione are high. However, as people age, the levels go down. Glutathione is produced with three essential amino acids that include cystine, glutamate, and glycine. Cystine is the rarest in diets among the three. Glutathione IV stands for glutathione injections that functions by injecting glutathione into the bloodstream via a needle.

Importance of Glutathione

Glutathione serves a very important function within the human body. It is imperative to note that it is produced naturally. When the levels go down, glutathione IV can be administered to boost its levels. Just like any other medication, there are glutathione benefits and side effects. There are a number of benefits that can be attributed to glutathione in the human body. Glutathione helps in improving the immune system of the body whereby it makes the body resistant to infections as well eliminating cancerous cells. Glutathione also improves the energy levels, mental focus, muscle function and physical strength. Glutathione levels can be boosted in several ways. The following are some of the ways in which individuals can boost their glutathione levels:

  • Exercising regularly
  • Consuming foods that increase glutathione production
  • Taking a glutathione injection
  • Taking glutathione supplements

The Negative Side of Glutathione

Glutathione has many positive effects but its deficiency within the body can be harmful. The side effects of glutathione include liver dysfunction in instances of an overdose. In some cases, it causes the swelling of the skin, wheezing, rashes and nausea. Glutathione side effects also include diarrhea, vomiting, and cramps. As much as it is an effective way of raising the glutathione levels within the body, it has a short life. Glutathione injections do not raise the same levels in the white blood cells and lymphocytes. Additionally, glutathione injections cannot efficiently raise the levels of glutathione within the brain due to their limitation in crossing the blood-brain barrier. With this information, a patient is able to make an informed decision on whether to undertake glutathione injections or not.
