Gerovital GH3 is a anti aging product created in the 50s, it is comprised primarily of procaine hydrochloride. Gerovital originally came about due to the immortal aspirations of a one Nicolae Ceausescu, a eccentric General Secretary of Romanian Communist Party. Ceausescu believed that not only was immortality possible but that it was within the grasp of modern science and thus commissioned a longevity project under the command of the controversial and brilliant biologist and physician, Ana Aslan, who eventually discovered the anti-aging properties of procaine. Despite the actual scientifically proven effectiveness of procaine the compound she eventually created for Ceausescu did little to nothing to extend the life of it’s user, many of whom were quite prestigious, such as Kirk Douglas, Dali and J.F.K.

The drug’s main ingredients include:

  • Procaine
  • Benzoic Acid
  • Disodium Phosphate

Efficacy (and lack thereof) and FDA Disavowal.

Today the drug is banned by commission of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) due to a lack of any provable signs of efficacy in regards to treatment in any areas of anti aging. Also, the FDA has determined that the drug provides no additional health benefits. One of the reasons for this is due to the rapid and unstable deterioration of the procaine (more commonly referred to both within and outside of the medical community as novocaine) within the concoction. After the novocaine begins deteriorating it quickly converts into DMAE (Dimethylethanolamine) and PABA (4-Aminobenzoic acid) which becomes unless for the drug’s initial intended purpose. However, there is one notable type of the drug which is still legal for use under commission of the FDA, that being any variant of the drug’s cosmetic line, save that the those products contain no amounts, however small, of procaine.

There were a small number of studies conducted in the 1970s that did show, however, that despite the drugs lack of anti-aging properties, it did contain some mild anti-depressant properties. This, primarily due to the drug’s MAO inhibiting ability. The primary side effects from taking the drug, even for short periods of time included, sharp drops in blood pressure, mild breathing problems as well as mild to moderate shakes.
