There are dozens of diet plans that a person who is looking to lose weight or control a medical condition can choose from. In recent years, low carbohydrate diets like Atkins diet, South Beach, and Paleo diets have become popular along with diets that control medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and autoimmune diseases. Some diets focus on losing weight slowing and naturally while other diets focus on rapid weight loss. One such rapid weight loss diet that has been around since the 1950s and has recently gained some interest is the HCG diet. The HCG diet is a short-term diet that uses a combination of the human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) hormone and dietary caloric restriction to help dieters lose up to a pound or more per day in weight.

The HCG Diet

There are two parts and three diet phases to the HCG diet side protocol that was originally developed in the 1950s by the HCG diet creator, Dr. A.T.W. Simeons. The first protocol is to take the HCG hormone for a minimum of 23 consecutive days through under-the-tongue liquid drops. The second HCG diet side protocol is the 500 calorie per day crash diet which lasts a minimum of 26 days and no more than 40 days. The HCG diet phases are:

  • Days 1-2: The dieter starts taking the HCG drops and begins eating a lot of high fat foods.
  • Days 3-23: The dieter continues taking the HCG drops and starts the 500 calorie diet eating foods that are on the HCG diet food list.
  • Days 24-26: The dieter stops taking the HCG drop but continues with the diet.

Side Effects

The HCG diet side effects have been documented to the point the FDA has taken notice. The FDA only approves of the HCG hormone for fertility treatments and not as a weight loss supplement. The side effects of taking HCG for anything other than fertility treatments includes blood clots, kidney failure, depression, and other serious health conditions. The 500 calorie diet has its own set of health risks including lack of adequate nutrition, nausea, fatigue, and gallstones. The HCG diet side effects are serious and potentially life threatening. Anyone who is considering going on this diet should consider the risks and ask their doctor if this diet is right for them.
