What is Moxibustion? Many people do not actually know what this term means. The dictionary definition of this word is “a method of treatment, originally in Chinese medicine, in which a moxa is burned on the skin.” This seems straightforward, but the next question is what is moxa? Moxa is “a flammable substance or material obtained from the leaves of certain Chinese and Japanese wormwood plants.” These may be just definitions, but they begin to describe the material used along with acupuncture. This has many different types of medicine under it, but the one we are discussing is acupuncture.

Types of Moxibustion

There are two main types or variations of moxibustion, which are direct and indirect. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Below you will find some key facts on both of these types.

Direct:
• when doing direct small cone pieces of the moxa are placed on the point and burned
• there are two subcategories: scarring ( can leave blisters and scars) and non-scarring (leave the skin tender, but not damaged)
Indirect:
• in this version, the end of a moxa stick, which is about the size of a cigar is lit
• this is then held close to the acupuncture area until it turns red
• the other indirect moxibustion is done by using the acupuncture needles and moxa that is placed on top and lit

Why choose Moxibustion?

There are many ways to relieve pain and relax muscles, but many suggest using moxibustion in acupuncture. This type of holistic healing is very good for the body and is much more natural and healthier than the traditional ways of treating chronic pain. Though it is not as scientifically proven and may seem a bit out there it is quite common in many cultures. Avoiding medicines and many costly doctor appointments can make this style of medicine very feasible. We suggest going to acupuncture Miami for all your needs and visit the center integrative medicine. Though you may be skeptical about going this route you can always do some research yourself and contact them directly for any further concerns you have about this method of treatment.
